Are We Not Human?

The Human League gave an interesting wrap-up tour date in NYC last weekend, but though they offered bop-y, pop-y renderings of their old favs -- plus new creations -- in front of art school-like video wall presentations, the short concert had all the feelings of being phoned in.

The Humans, on the other hand, featuring Toyah Willcox,  Bill Rieflin (formerly of R.E.M.) and Chris Wong at the Highline Ballroom Tuesday night, were a refreshing blast of experimental synth and provocative poetry. Closing with These Boots Were Made for Walking and joking about how she's always a bit late -- as this was her first NYC performance after singing for over 30 years -- Toyah was impressive to listen to, her bell-like vocals and mesmerizing way of moving a delight.
